Dark vibrant saturated colours. Very youthful and compressed with the oak barely noticeable. The wine is dominated by the fragrance of red berries, spice, sour to roasted cherry, plum and cut flower stems. The spices and earth are from the Grenache, and amazing sweetness and very long gritty vibrant tannins. The Shiraz adds slight spicy red mulberry, potpourri fruit characters then the liquorish and prune characters, as well as a boldness mid-way in the taste. The Mourvedre adds notes of ripe salami, iodine, lavender characters and late grainy tannin. In its youth, The Ironstone Pressings is almost black, unusual for such a blend. Upon release, this vintage is extraordinarily fragrant but also very tight. As with previous vintages, the extreme terroir shows through due to the extraordinarily low grape yield, showing characters of earth, stones and dried plant material feature. With time, the Grenache and Shiraz blossom as rich, sweet, violet-like scents, with a spicy based aroma, before malty, sweet, dark chocolate flavours are revealed. The Mourvedre adds dried herbs and iodine characters that are very persisent matched with slightly chalky tannins.
Wine Advocate The 2003 The Ironstone Pressings GSM is a gorgeous blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Shiraz, and 5% Mourvedre. It explodes from the glass with notes of Provencal herbs, black cherries, cassis, pepper, licorice, and incense. A wine of great intensity, richness, body, and purity with terrific balance as well as a layered mouthfeel, this superb Australian red should be consumed over the next 10-12 years.
