![]() In the 14th century, during their periods of office in Avignon, the Popes - and especially Jean XXII (1316-1334), who built the pontifical palace - were deeply impressed by the exceptional terroir of Châteauneuf, and planted vines on the slopes surrounding the château. In doing so, they greatly helped to spread the local wines' reputation, all over the world. Domaine de Beaurenard, at Châteauneuf du Pape, has been a family-owned estate for seven generations. A notorial act dated from the 16th of December 1695 mentions "Bois Renard ", which over time has become "Beaurenard". Today, Paul and Regine and their two sons Daniel and Frédéric, are endeavouring to perpetuate the tradition. The Domaine stretches over 30 hectares of vineyard around Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and 25 hectares in the appelations of Côtes-du-Rhône and of Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Rasteau.
