On the nose, ripe aromas of red and black cherry, raspberry and blueberry are nuanced with hints of licorice, vanilla, sarsaparilla, lavender and thyme. On the palate, polished tannins envelop exotic flavors of roasted meats, black olive and white pepper, ending in a long, mineral finish. Notes winemaker Nigel Kinsman: The wild flavors of Syrah are perfectly balanced by the refined minerality and herbal notes of chaparral. This wine exhibits delicious fruit, beautiful poise, elegance and harmony.

Wine AdvocateAnother standout, the 2010 Syrah Eisele Vineyard is drop-dead gorgeous. A bevy of black olives and plums burst from the glass in an explosive wine loaded with varietal nuance and sheer power. The cooler vintage brought out the best. This is a marvelous, totally compelling wine endowed with massive concentration and depth. The addition of 3% Viognier and a small amount of stems add complexity. Black fruit, tobacco, savory herbs, licorice and menthol are layered into the brooding finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

Wine SpectatorThe flavors are explosive in this dense, firm and pure version, with expansive roasted game meat, herb, espresso, hot brick, black tea and mocha notes. Ends with dense, chewy tannins that cling. Should be a long-lived wine, best served by a few years of cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2030. 390 cases made.
