Georg Albrecht Schneider Niersteiner Hipping Spätlese Riesling 2017
|Region||Germany, Rheinhessen, Nierstein|
|Brand||Georg Albrecht Schneider|
Hints of pine frond, earth and smoke entice on the nose of this unusual, remarkably well-priced Riesling. Semi-sweet in style, it’s rich and creamy on the palate with luscious peach and grapefruit flavors. It’s surprising nuanced too, exposing layers of steel, crushed mineral and acid that meld beautifully through a long finish.
Primary juicy pineapple and tangerine flavors abound in this fruit-forward yet elegant spätlese. Semisweet in style, it's pleasantly honeyed but balanced by zesty streaks of lemon-lime acidity and a kick of spicy minerality. The finish is long and elegantly floral.
This glossy, glycerol-rich and unabashedly sweet bottling represents a significant advance over its vintage 2016 predecessor, in clarity as well as in animating brightness and tang. There is an impression of canned fruit in syrup to the flavors of pear and white peach that were anticipated on the nose, but the lingering finish also offers welcome stimulation in the form of lime and tangerine zest accompanied by tangy and piquant peach core.
Floral, refined and charming, with notes of white raspberry, persimmon and sage honey. Mineral details emerge midpalate and add to the complexity, but this tails off on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 830 cases made, 448 cases imported.
