Penley Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
A bouquet of dark, berried, inky fruit with plenty of sawdusty/smoky oak. While it’s warm with alcohol it remains smooth, supple and persistent. It’s all blackcurrant, bay leaves and aforementioned oak on the pallet. Tannin is fine-grained.
This is a complete and harmonious wine with great persistence of flavor. Bright and delicious, speaking of contemporary Coonawarra Cabernet.
Ready to drink now or for enjoying the rewards of cellaring for the next 5-7 years.
Wine SpectatorDense, with sink-your-teeth-into-them tannins and concentration to the plum, cassis and blackberry flavors. Sage and rosemary accents linger in the background. Strikes the right balance between power and elegance, with grace notes of eucalyptus, black tea and tobacco lingering on the velvety finish. Drink now through 2030. 4,300 cases imported.
Wine EnthusiastMade in the same vein as the Tolmer, and unmistakably from Coonawarra, this wine is a little less generous than its counterpart. Ripe brambly fruit, and leafy, herbal and minty aromas lead into a full-bodied palate of grainy savory tannins cloaked in rich berry fruit and coffee flavors. Drink now-2028.
