Xavier Monnot Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 2016
|Region||France, Burgundy, Volnay|
Xavier Monnot is a leading producer in Meursault whose winemaking style emphasizes purity of fruit, elegance, and complexity. Prior to the release of the 2005 vintage, the property was known as Domaine René Monnier (Xavier's grandfather). In 2005, along with improvements in the vineyard and cellar, Xavier began bottling his wines under his own label.
Volnay is often described as silky and elegant but the wines can vary in style depending on the soil and elevation of the vineyard. The premier crus situated south of the village, like Clos des Chênes, have a high percentage of limestone and show classic Volnay character of perfume and finesse.
Intense aromas of black cherry, pomegranate and tamarind mark this juicy red. Smooth, with well-integrated tannins lending a dusty feel as the finish plays out. Already harmonious, this should develop well over the next two decades. Best from 2022 through 2036. 375 cases made, 175 cases imported.
The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, half from vines planted in 1936 and the other half from vines planted in 1978, has a very floral and expressive bouquet with blueberry, cassis and violet aromas. This is quite powerful but it has a little more delineation than the other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with a dab of licorice on the entry, firm but fine tannins and a pleasing edginess toward the sustained finish. Excellent.
