Purlieu Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Purlieu means “the edge of the forest” or “an outlying area.” Directly, it is a reference to our home base in the new Coombsville AVA, at the edge of the forest and the entire Napa Valley. Symbolically, “purlieu” refers to our approach to winemaking, to exploring the outskirts and navigating the boundaries of what one may expect of a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. For us, the key to successfully walking that edge lies in maintaining balance: between innovation and tradition, confidence and restraint, depth and refreshment.

Wine AdvocateDeep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up exuberant notions of blackcurrant pastilles, blackberry compote and stewed red plums with touches of kirsch, potpourri, fragrant earth and cigar box. Full-bodied and opulently fruited in the mouth, the powerful flavors are well framed by firm, ripe tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
Wine SpectatorSolid, featuring a direct beam of cassis and raspberry reduction flavors, flanked by anise, apple wood and bramble notes. A loamy echo chimes through the rich, polished finish. Best from 2020 through 2030. 1,584 cases made.
VinousPurlieu's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is dark, plush and enveloping. Blackberry jam, chocolate, new French oak, spice and leather meld together in a supple, juicy Cabernet that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The flamboyant, sumptuous style that works well for a wine that will most likely be enjoyed on the young side. Floral and spice notes add lift on the finish. The 2016 is an especially fine vintage for the Purlieu Napa Valley Cabernet.
