Winemaker Notes :

This wine has ripe fruit, acidity, balance and great quality. There is some viscosity in the mouth, and the barrel influence is well integrated.

VinousThe 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a towering majestic wine. Rich, powerful and yet massively tannic, the 2013 possesses a stunning combination of super-ripe fruit, bright acids and plenty of supporting structure. In the early going, the Howell Mountain is a bit reticent, especially next to the Trailer, but after several hours, the vibrancy of the Howell Mountain bottling dazzles. Dunn's Howell Mountain Cabernet is without question one of the wines of the great 2013 vintage. Randy and Mike Dunn's 2013s are off the charts. The Napa Valley Cabernet will give readers a good idea of the vintage, while the two Howell Mountain wines are even more intense. In 2013, the Dunns bottled their Trailer Cabernet alone for the second time (the first was 2012) before redeveloping the vineyard. The Trailer is made in a riper style than the flagship Howell Mountain Cabernet, with more oak influence as well. At the outset, it is more immediate than the Howell Mountain, but as I followed the wines over hours and then days, the Howell showed more energy and overall intensity. 98+

James SucklingThe blue-fruit and floral character are phenomenal here with hints of lavender and violets in addition to walnuts. Full-bodied, yet tight and reserved with extremely polished fruit and chewy tannins. Love the austerity. Tension. Drink in 2020.

Decanter"Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, rich earth, spice and liquorice are followed by a palate of striking persistence and structural amplitude. In 2013 this is typically large-scaled, fresh and built for the long haul, but Mike Dunn’s thoughtful changes to the estate’s barrel programme have resulted in more refined tannins. Brettanomyces issues that plagued the Dunn wines about 15 years ago also seem long gone, so nothing should compromise their lovely evolution in the cellar

Wine AdvocateThe stunning 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a 30-year wine. Loads of crème de cassis, blackberry liqueur, licorice, incense and oak jump from the glass of this huge, massive, concentrated and ripe wine that reminds me of some of the early vintages from Michael Dunn's father, Randy, particularly the 1982 and 1984. This is a beauty of great intensity and purity that should age effortlessly for 25-30+ years. If you can find it, it will be certainly worth having, as it flirts with perfection.
