Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc 2017Winemaker Notes: We are extraordinarily proud of our 2017 Sauvignon Blanc. In a vintage of such extreme heat, we were able to craft a wine that is ripe and textured, yet still retains its freshness—a notable achievement! The wine is mouthcoating and viscous, with a balancing acid tension and great mouth-watering juiciness. The beauty is there aromatically, with an initial impression of lime zest, lemon pith, and citrus blossom. It then opens to white peach, nectarine, mandarin, cream, with hints of vanilla and lime curd, both on the nose and on the palate. Rich and texturally enticing, with great balance and length.
Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2016Winery Note: ‘You can never have too much of a good thing’ – this proverb sums up the 2015 vintage. It was the kind of year when there were no sub-standard wines, everything was good, even wines from the youngest vines. Our 2015 Gigondas is reminiscent of the 2010 for its density, depth, mellowness and saline freshness. Gigondas offers a fairly unusual rendition of Grenache, difficult to compare with what you find in neighbouring areas. Its character can be ascribed to the ubiquituous limestone marl in our appellation. And Saint Cosme is a very unusual rendition of Gigondas because our soils are distinctively Tortonian and virtually non-existent in other parts of the appellation. This unique soil type at Saint Cosme combines with a cold microclimate with temperature readings matching those at elevations of 400m above sea level, whereas our vineyards sit at an altitude of 240m. This combination of natural factors makes Saint Cosme virtually incomparable and Grenache develops a persona that can be disconcerting such is its pervasive freshness – a dimension rarely associated with this grape. You have to live here to get a proper sense of this and try and style it. For example, our vines face west and therefore bask in the balmy evening sunshine; in the morning, they are sheltered by the Dentelles de Montmirail – these natural patterns impart balance and texture to the wines. All of this is even more discernable in great vintages like 2015. Excellence, therefore, does serve an educational purpose. Strawberry, violet, iodine and liquorice. Bottled without filtering.
Lucienne Smith Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016Winery Note: This wine artfully combines fragrant strawberry and blackberry aromas with earthy cocoa-dust undertones. Poggio Bonelli Chianti Classico 2015Winemaker Notes : A genuine and characteristic expression of the Sangiovese varietal, Chianti Classico has a deep, dense ruby red color. Wild berries, sour black cherry, thyme and leather feature on the nose. Though bold and dry, the taste is softened by the delicate sweetness of the French oak.
Spreitzer Hallgartener Hendelberg Trocken 2014Tasting Notes: The vineyard is in the hills in Hallgarten; it has hilly and flat sections, and the slopes sit on Taunus slate, not unlike the great Jungfer vineyard, but higher up and cooler. This wine was done in three new Stücks of Taunus oak, and it may be the best “oaky” Riesling I’ve ever tasted outside of some of the Von Winnings. There’s a curious sense of sweetness though the wine is quite dry. It’s fantastically mineral and flowery; lime blossom and balsam, smoke and quince. Don’t miss this; it’s another crazy dialect of Riesling, and it’s silly-delicious.
Donnhoff Estate Riesling Trocken 2017Winemaker Notes: Characterful Riesling from the steeply sloping vineyards of the middle Nahe region. The vines grow in stony, weathered volcanic soils of porphyry and melaphyr in particular, with certain amounts of slate and quartzite. A dry Riesling wine, very typical of our wine estate. Wonderfully fresh and well defined, elegant with a tingling minerality. A delicious wine for every day with moderate alcohol and very soothing acidity.
