Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel 2017
Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel 2017
Winemaker Notes: I am incredibly proud of this wine. I have said it here before but it bears repeating—even though this is one of the least expensive wines we make, in many ways it is the most important. First, it is the one Bedrock wine that trickles out to most markets, so if someone gets introduced to our wines, there is a good chance it is this one. As such, it has to be reflective of the style we place value on. Second, this is the wine that allows us to rehab old vineyards by giving us a place to put the fruit while we upgrade farming, pruning, and soil health; at an average of 80 years of age, these lovely old vines appreciate the attention. Third, we now farm over 50% of the fruit that goes into this bottling, which allows us to make the hard farming decisions (dropping fruit, picking in multiple passes, etc.) to ensure we get the quality we need. Fourth, it is a statewide blend of vines, which means we can flex towards the strengths of a vintage. In 2017 we were able to put extra focus on the great quality in Contra Costa County (27%), Dry Creek (12%), Sonoma Valley (17%), Alexander Valley (11%), and Lodi (10%) to create a delicious, balanced and juicy wine. Fifth, we want this wine to spread the gospel of Zinfandel from California, and as such this sees fruit from great sites such as Evangelho, Bedrock, Nervo Ranch, Teldeschi Ranch, Sodini and Pato Vineyard. The final wine is roughly 86% Zinfandel, 5% Petite Sirah, and 5% Carignan, with the balance being Alicante Bouschet and all the other crazy and lovely field-blended varieties found in our old vineyards. Drink 2019-2030.

Arkenstone Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Arkenstone Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Winery Notes: The Arkenstone Estate Sauvignon Blanc originally planted in 1997 is grown in 6 different very steep, very rocky, vineyard blocks on our Howell Mountain Estate. Choosing to plant only in the perfect patches of nutrient lacking, well-drained, white volcanic soils we are able to grow very concentrated, rich, but balanced, beautiful Sauvignon Blanc. Along with the Sauvignon Blanc in the lower part of our vineyard, we also farm a small block of Semillon which is blended with our Sauvignon Blanc. The percentage of Semillon will change each vintage, but the results are always consistent. The Semillon adds beautiful floral aromatics along with a bigger mid-palate that seamlessly complements and integrates with the Sauvignon Blanc's natural notes of melon, citrus, and minerality. From our rigorous farming practices to winemaking to our final blend, this wine is very much our tip of the cap to the classic white wines of Bordeaux. As with all 13 acres of our Arkenstone Estate, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are both farmed exclusively in-house using only organic farming techniques overseen by Winemaker Sam Kaplan.

Macphail The Flyer 2016
Macphail The Flyer 2016
Winemaker Notes: Every wine I put in the bottle is made with the same approach – capture all the potential in the glass without having to augment or subtract. I believe less intervention in the cellar makes a better wine. My goal is to craft a seamless wine where every component is in balance. I approach every wine with precision – the vineyard brings all the complexity and the oak should simply be the background and support the fruit not take the lead role. It is easy to be seduced by the bright hues and youthful nature of The Flyer – fresh berries, smoky notes and earth tones lead the aromas on this classic Sonoma Coast blend. Rich and dense upon entry, there is a ton of complexity and provocative layers of black fruits – specifically dried cherries and black raspberries that are supported by beautiful acidity and silky tannins. A hint of vanilla oak sweetness shows through a lengthy and persistent finish.

Pont Neuf Le Bruant 2015
Pont Neuf Le Bruant 2015
Winemaker Notes: “Le Bruant” is named for our village in the Haute Côte de Nuits of Burgundy, less than a dozen houses gathered around a source which brought delicious water all the way from the Alps.  It comes from the gently sloping hills of Goldridge soil in the Martinelli Zio Tony Vineyard where the summer mornings are often foggy. The landscape is gentle and quiet and produces wonderfully elegant pinot noir. The flavors, however, take us back to the hills above Burgundy where the locals hunt pheasant and wild boar and produce the best cassis. “Le Bruant” is the perfect combination of rustic backcountry flavors and the refinement unique to pinot noir. The wine is brilliant ruby and red-violet, in spite of being un-filtered. Sweetly perfumed aromas of Huckleberry and Pomegranate mix with earthy forest floor and intensely pure red fruit flavors. The fine balance of acid and ripe fruit keeps it lively on the palate carrying the flavors to a lingering finish. We recommend decanting at this early stage of development. 50 cases produced.

Hess Collection Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Hess Collection Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Winemaker Notes: Our estate grown Cabernet is the flagship of The Hess Collection – grown on the  original vineyards first acquired by Donald Hess in the late 70s, this is one of my  favorite wines to grow and make. The 2014 vintage is vibrant with big blackberry  fruit notes and sweet pleasing tannins – a surprise coming from Mount Veeder.  Tannins on Mount Veeder need the most attention to ensure we craft a wine that is  approachable and round, and this vintage delivers on all fronts. I love the mouth  filling notes of espresso and cassis that layer around a very precise black fruit core.  This is a wine that can age and age but if you are like me and you like your wines  young, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Tensley Colson Canyon Syrah 2017
Tensley Colson Canyon Syrah 2017
Winery Notes: This is the second vintage of Colson Canyon Syrah that we’ve produced since purchasing the vineyard in 2016. Buying Colson was nothing short of a dream come true for us. Colson has been part of our portfolio since 2000, and it’s been a real superstar for us, garnering Food and Wine Magazine’s Best Syrah in America award as well as making the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 twice. Since taking over Colson, we’ve dedicated ourselves to meticulously farming this unique location. We’ve thinned the canopy, dropped crop and carefully monitored watering. As a result, we feel that 2016 and 2017 have been the best Colson vintages to date. This wine is rich and deep with decadent notes of chocolate, bacon, and black fruits, The mouthfeel is round and velvety with a long, lingering finish. Look for hints of vanilla from the 20 percent new French oak we use on each vintage. Drink this wine now or age it over the next 12 years.

Belle Glos Las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017
Winemaker Notes The Spanish term 'Las Alturas' means 'the heights', a fitting name for this vineyard located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. At this elevation, the sunny but very cool climate creates a wine bearing all the hallmarks of this coastal region: robust, expressive, full-bodied and balanced by a firm acidity. Deep garnet in color with an aromatic medley of black cherry, marionberry, ripe plum and a hint of anise. Dark fruit on the palate with flavors of wild berries, caramelized oak and cacao nibs complemented by subtle notes of vanilla, cedar and a hint of lavender and forest floor. Pont Neuf Pont Royal 2017
Winemaker Notes: The 2017 Pont Royal reveals a brilliant clarity both in appearance and flavors. Its vineyard character is classic; forward citrus, fresh peach, custard and honied beeswax accents are consistent hallmarks of our Chardonnay. There is a superior silky texture, almost creamy, that is only experienced in Premier and Grand Cru wines in Burgundy. French oak takes a back seat to the fruit, adding nuanced aromas of toasted brioche and fine structure to the wine. We employed 80% new oak from the Vosges forest, contributing the delicate toast and vanilla aromas and playing perfectly with bright citrus fruit. Barrel-fermented, aged on the lees and bottled un-fined and unfiltered, this natural fermentation showcases the vineyard and the vintage. 75 cases produced.

Hess The Lioness Chardonnay 2016
Winemaker Notes: With this wine, we aim to craft a big, beautiful Napa Valley Chardonnay that showcases what our Estate vineyard is capable of producing. I am striving for texture and full flavors when I make the barrel selection, and am attracted to clones that produce fruit of low yields but tremendous quality. The Lioness is dynamic and beautifully balanced with a lush texture that is complemented by a core of acidity running throughout. Warre's Vintage Port 2016
Warre's Vintage Port 2016
#14 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2018 Winemaker Notes: Nearly half the Warre’s 2016 is made up of old, mixed vines from both Cavadinha and Retiro. In sections of these vineyards, as many as 30 to 40 different varieties are planted together, and at Retiro they are between 80 and 100 years old with a predominance of Touriga Franca, a variety that has typically prospered in the Rio Torto Valley, home to Quinta do Retiro. These vineyards produced tiny yields, just 630g/vine. The structure and complexity of the old vines was balanced with great acidity and freshness from the Cavadinha grapes and the superb floral aromatics from the two Touriga varieties harvested at Quinta da Telhada. Due to the very cool nights during the vintage, the grapes arrived at the Cavadinha lagar winery so cold in the mornings that, in effect, they had a ‘cold soak maceration’ before fermentation began, favouring excellent aromatic extraction. Harvesting finished at Cavadinha on October 10th, a couple of days before the weather broke. More perfect harvesting conditions could not have been hoped for.

Tensley Santa Barbara Syrah 2017
Tensley Santa Barbara Syrah 2017
Winery Notes: Once again this vintage of the Santa Barbara County Syrah is made up of fruit from the diverse microclimates that Santa Barbara County has to offer. This year’s SBC blend is comprised primarily of Syrah from the Hilltop Vineyard. Hilltop is a cool climate vineyard and brings a splash of red fruit that is super fresh with a bright acidity. The rest of the blend is made up of Colson Canyon and Clover Creek Sryah. These vineyards both bring lush roundness to the wine along with deep notes of plum, blackberries and smoked meats. Drink this wine now or age over the next seven years.
