Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 2019
|Region||France, Rhone, Chateauneuf-du-Pape|
|Brand||Clos du Mont-Olivet|
First produced in 1989. the Flagship (jewel) of the estate and made only in exceptional vintages from our oldest vines of Grenache (the oldest were planted in 1901) with a compliment of Mourvedre and/or Syrah in varying proportions according to the vintage. All the varietals are fermented together and give rise to a wine both concentrated and elegant and with a great finish.
Dark in profile, but very seductive, with the cassis, crushed plum and cherry reduction notes carried by the substantial yet very silky structure. Light floral, incense, black tea and warm earth details score the finish. Tantalizing now for its mouthfeel and expressiveness, but there's no rush at all. Drink now through 2038. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported.
Brilliant violet. A highly perfumed nose displays mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berries, licorice and a hint of potpourri. Sappy cherry, black raspberry and spicecake flavors show vibrant lift and take on floral pastille and botanical herb nuances as the wine opens up. In a lively style, finishing sweet, floral and extremely long, with fine-grained tannins adding final grip.
Moving to the classic 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape, this little gem should be snatched up by readers, as it's as textbook as they come. Ruby/plum-hued, with a medium to full-bodied, round, elegant mouthfeel, it has ample red and black fruits, notes of peppery herbs and licorice, supple tannins, and a great finish. A wonderful 2019, it will have two decades of longevity.
