Winery Notes:
The foundational reference for ‘classic’ Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, the old vines at Sanford & Benedict (planted in 1971) reliably yield balanced fruit and wines of character. There is a wonderful transparency to Sandhi's 2020 Sanford & Benedict as the floral, citrus, and nutty aromas all mingle together to offer a compelling and expressive wine.

The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict is a pretty powerful wine, especially from this section of the ranch planted on own rooted vines dating back to 1971. Deep and phenolic, with tremendous intensity, the 2020 is impressive right out of the gate. The purity of the fruit is just striking. Tangerine oil, honey, chamomile, mint and dried flowers lend resonance throughout, making for a totally unique Chardonnay. I can't help notice that the S&B Chardonnay is more interesting than the Pinot.

Crisp aromas of chalk, jicama and white flower make for an extremely stony introduction to this bottling from the region's most historic vineyard. The palate is tightly woven, with bright flavors of citrus juice, lemon pith and chalk combining for a grippy sip.

This shows terrific transparency, with pear, mandarin orange, lemon verbena and white pepper details that are focused, balanced and complex, while a whiff of listea oil lingers on the supple finish. Drink now through 2030. 205 cases made.
