Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling 2019
The Sonnenuhr has a fresh and straight forward late harvest character. Ripe yellow stone fruit (vineyard peach, apricot) and tropical fruit (pineapple, mango) are underlined by the fine minerally terroir of Wehlen.
This Riesling is a great food wine. Try it with marinated chicken and bell-pepper-mango chutney with rice.
A touch of petrol leads off, backed by peach, apricot and orange cream flavors. Rich and sumptuous, with a beam of vibrant acidity cutting through and defining the finish. Best from 2024 through 2040. 200 cases made, 112 cases imported.
Tropical flavors abound throughout this producer's lineup of 2019 Spätlese, but piercing flavors of guava, pink grapefruit and mango make this bottling particularly exuberant. It's profoundly ripe and succulent in sweetness but balanced neatly by crisp tangerine acidity and a clean, mineral finish. At peak now–2025 but should hold much further.
